Embracing Community and Fresh Fare: The Lovingston Farmers Market Returns

The Lovingston Farmers Market is back for its second year, kicking off on April 17th and continuing every Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. Spearheaded by Leslie Brock and Selena Hitzeman, this initiative is a response to the local demand for fresh produce in Nelson County.

Brock and Hitzeman, inspired by the success of the Nellysford Farmers Market, recognized a similar need closer to home. “We saw a need to bring local produce to this area of Nelson County,” Brock emphasized. They also aimed to make healthy food more accessible within the county, ensuring everyone has access to nutritious options.

A pivotal step in achieving this goal was becoming authorized to accept SNAP benefits. SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, provides low-income families with a card to purchase household food items. “Our aim with the farmers market was to make healthy food accessible to all,” Brock reiterated.

To accept SNAP benefits, the market underwent a formal application process. Individuals interested in applying can do so online at www.dss.virginia.gov or visit the local department of social services in Lovingston for assistance.

Once approved, the market employs a special reader to process EBT transactions, allowing customers to choose their spending amount and receive corresponding coins for vendor purchases.

Building on its successful first year, the market is expanding its offerings to include crafters and artists alongside food vendors. With 17 vendors already on board, including three food trucks, the market continues to welcome new vendors. Brock emphasized the affordability of vendor fees, set at $15 per day with no additional sales percentage charged.

This season, visitors can look forward to a diverse range of offerings, catering to various tastes and interests. From nursery plants and watercolor art to artisanal breads, jellies, and fresh produce, there’s something for everyone.

Plus, with pizza and taco trucks in attendance, there’s no shortage of delicious fare. As a nonprofit endeavor, the Lovingston Farmers Market is open to sponsorships, further solidifying its dedication to community involvement and accessibility.

As it enters its second year, the Lovingston Farmers Market serves as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in promoting health, accessibility, and local entrepreneurship.
