MADISON, Wis. – Governor Tony Evers has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on Wednesday to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Evers also declared Sept. 11, 2024, as a state Day of Service and Remembrance. He encourages Wisconsinites to use the day to help their neighbors and communities.
On 9/11, we reflect on the spirit of service and our strength in unity, Evers said. I encourage everyone to honor this day by giving back, whether through volunteering or small acts of kindness.
For those looking to volunteer, opportunities can be found at volunteerwisconsin.org.
Wednesday marks 23 years since al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four planes, crashing two into the World Trade Center in New York and one into the Pentagon. Passengers on the fourth plane stopped the hijackers, but it crashed in Pennsylvania.
The attacks killed 2,977 people, including 343 firefighters and 72 law enforcement officers. It remains the deadliest terrorist attack and the deadliest day for firefighters and police in history.
