West Virginia Senator Michael Maroney’s Preliminary Hearing Delayed Over Media Exclusion Motion

West Virginia State Senator Michael Maroney’s preliminary hearing took an unexpected turn when his defense attorney, Harry Moore, filed a motion to exclude the media from the courtroom, despite initial approval for their presence by Magistrate Judge Zachary Allman.

This resulted in a nearly 45-minute delay as Marshall County Prosecuting Attorney Joe Canestraro explained that the court proceedings were temporarily stayed.

The defense has requested the circuit court to review the decision, and Maroney’s case will remain on hold until a ruling is made.

Maroney faces charges of driving under the influence, disorderly conduct, and indecent exposure, following two separate arrests within a span of two months.

He also had charges related to no insurance and no vehicle registration, but these have been dismissed after Maroney provided proof of compliance.

The case will be postponed until the circuit court decides on the media issue, with no new hearing date set yet. Canestraro expects a swift decision from the circuit court.
