A man from Vermont is facing several charges after crashing into a New Hampshire State Trooper’s vehicle on Thanksgiving.
New Hampshire State Police responded to many weather-related incidents from a snowstorm on Thursday, with several crashes and vehicles off the road on Interstate 89, especially between Warner and Lebanon.
At around 10:11 a.m. on I-89 south in Sutton, a trooper was helping a driver who had slid off the road. The trooper’s marked car had its emergency lights flashing, and a Department of Transportation truck with amber lights was also on the scene, telling drivers to “Move Over” with a message board.
While the trooper was helping the stranded driver in the right lane, a black Honda Accord, driven by 22-year-old Daniel Poroj of Shelburne, Vermont, was driving too fast for the snowy road conditions. The Accord slid on the snow and hit the back of the police cruiser. The car then slid into a fire chief’s pickup truck, which was also at the scene.
Both the trooper and Poroj were taken to New London Hospital for minor injuries.
Poroj is scheduled to appear in court on March 18, 2025, facing charges of driving without a valid license, negligent driving, driving an unregistered vehicle, not following the “Move Over” law, and speeding. It is unclear if he has a lawyer.
State police are reminding drivers that New Hampshire law requires them to slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles, including police, fire trucks, EMS, and roadside assistance vehicles. If lanes are blocked, drivers must reduce their speed and give plenty of space.
