Understanding the Social Impact of Gambling in Massachusetts: A Deep Dive into SEIGMA Findings

The ongoing Social and Economic Impacts of Gambling in Massachusetts SEIGMA project, led by Rachel Volberg of UMass Amherst, has uncovered concerning trends in gambling behavior.

The study, presented to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, found a significant increase in monthly gamblers experiencing gambling issues, rising from 12.7% in 2014 to 25.6% in 2023.

This increase contrasts with a stable 2% problem gambling rate in general population surveys conducted before and after casino legalization in the state.

The research relied on online surveys conducted in 2014, 2022, and 2023, focusing on frequent gamblers. While these panels may not represent the entire population, they provide valuable insights into behaviors and attitudes among those most likely to experience gambling problems.

One key finding is the dramatic rise in sports betting, which surged from 18.8% in 2022 to 28.3% in 2023, following the legalization of sports betting in Massachusetts.

This uptick in sports betting coincides with a broader rise in gambling activities, including lotteries, horse racing, and online gambling. Although COVID-19 initially dampened gambling activity, its impact has faded, particularly for those more prone to gambling problems.

The study also highlights a shift in public opinion. Frequent gamblers increasingly view gambling as harmful, particularly due to concerns over addiction.

Fewer people now see casinos as job creators, and support for the legalization of all forms of gambling has waned.

Volberg suggests that the intense media coverage surrounding sports betting legalization may have exacerbated gambling issues by drawing attention to it.

These findings have raised public health concerns in Massachusetts, especially regarding the long-term effects of sports betting legalization.

In response, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health recently invested $3.1 million to combat youth gambling, funding various prevention programs.
