Tragic Bridge Collapse in Mississippi Claims Lives During Demolition

A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, when a bridge in Simpson County, Mississippi, collapsed during demolition, resulting in fatalities. The Mississippi Department of Transportation MDOT confirmed the loss of lives but did not disclose the exact number of victims.

In a statement, MDOT extended condolences to the families affected by the tragedy. Fortunately, an inspector who was present at the site during the incident was unharmed.

The bridge, located on State Route 149 and spanning the Strong River, had been closed to traffic since September 18 and was undergoing demolition as part of a bridge replacement project. This project was projected to take approximately 12 to 18 months to complete.
