Over the weekend, a student at San Jose State University was found dead in their dorm room at Spartan Village on the Paseo, according to university officials.
The university is in touch with the student’s roommates and family.
Hundreds of students recently moved into the new dorm to start the 2024-2025 school year, with move-in days on August 16 and 17.
San Jose Fire Department arrived at the scene at 1:13 p.m. on Sunday and confirmed the student was deceased. The cause of death is currently unknown. University police are investigating the incident.
In a message to the campus, Mari Fuentes-Martin, the vice president of student affairs, expressed sorrow over the loss, calling it “heartbreaking and devastating” for the San Jose State community. She noted that this was an isolated incident.
The incident occurred just two weeks after the grand opening of Spartan Village, a newly converted dorm building in downtown San Jose. The 13-floor building, formerly a Fairmont hotel, now houses hundreds of students.
The university is prioritizing student safety and well-being. Counseling services are available to all students, with the Student Wellness Center offering support Monday through Friday. 24-hour crisis counseling is also available by calling 408-924-5678.
