A series of severe thunderstorms unleashed multiple tornadoes throughout southern Michigan, leaving a path of devastation in its wake. West Michigan, notably Kalamazoo and Portage, experienced the brunt of the storms, with reports of injuries and extensive property damage.
Pavilion Estates Mobile Home Community in Pavilion Township, near Portage, was severely damaged, injuring approximately a dozen inhabitants. Emergency services worked tirelessly to assess the situation and assure the safety of all occupants, despite reports of at least one person being trapped inside a demolished home.
In Sherwood Township, Branch County, a tornado destroyed seven structures, the most of which were residences. Fortunately, there were no recorded deaths or major injuries.
Despite the enormous devastation, Portage officials stated that there were no significant casualties as a result of the tornadoes that ripped down residential and business buildings in the area. Residents were urged to remain sheltered while first responders completed their work.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced a state of emergency in numerous Southwest Michigan counties, including Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, Branch, and Cass. This declaration sought to accelerate resources and assistance to affected communities, highlighting the combined efforts of state and local emergency teams.
The National Weather Service reported many tornado touchdowns, including a second one near Portage and another west of Battle Creek. These tornadoes caused more damage and triggered severe weather warnings in surrounding areas.
One of the structures damaged was a FedEx facility in Portage, which collapsed under the force of the storms. Other commercial and residential structures were also heavily damaged, demonstrating the severity of the storms.
According to the latest reports, hundreds of houses were without power, compounding the difficulties experienced by affected populations. Local authorities, including St. Joseph County Undersheriff Jason Bingaman, prioritised life safety operations and began preliminary damage assessments in response to the storms.
