This City Has Been Named the Murder Capital of Minnesota

In 2023, Robbinsdale, a city in Minnesota, earned the designation of being the murder capital of the state. With a population of 14,213, Robbinsdale reported 4 murders, resulting in a murder rate of 28.1 per 100,000 people, the highest among all cities in Minnesota.

Minnesota, also known as the North Star State, exhibited varying levels of crime across its cities in 2023. Out of the total 126 cities, only 34 reported a murder to the FBI, while 92 places had no recorded murders. Notably, the cities with the highest murder counts were Minneapolis and Robbinsdale.

Minneapolis, boasting a population of 438,463, reported the highest number of murders in the state, totaling 94. Despite this, its murder rate per 100,000 people stood at 21.4, lower than that of Robbinsdale.

Additionally, other cities with elevated murder rates included St. Paul, Brooklyn Center, and Farmington. St. Paul, with a population of 309,957, reported 38 murders, resulting in a murder rate of 12.3 per 100,000 people. Brooklyn Center, with a population of 30,258, reported 4 murders, resulting in a murder rate of 13.2 per 100,000 people. Farmington, with a population of 23,235, reported 3 murders, resulting in a murder rate of 12.9 per 100,000 people.

The designation of Robbinsdale as the murder capital is based on its murder rate per capita, not the total number of murders. Although Minneapolis had the highest murder count, Robbinsdale’s murder rate was higher when adjusted for population size.

It is crucial to highlight that the majority of places in Minnesota reported no murders to the FBI in 2023. Despite elevated murder rates in specific cities, Minnesota as a whole remains committed to reducing crime and ensuring the safety of its residents.
