Tennessee to Require Motor Vehicle Records for New Residents from 8 States Starting January 10

Starting January 10, Tennesseans moving from California, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Nevada, Oklahoma, Vermont, or West Virginia will need to submit a Motor Vehicle Record MVR from their previous state when applying for a Tennessee driver’s license.

The MVR must be issued within a month of presentation at a Driver Services Center. In addition to the MVR, applicants will need to provide other standard documents for obtaining a new Tennessee license.

However, residents from the other 41 states that participate in the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators’ State-to-State S2S Verification Service do not need to provide an MVR.

The S2S service electronically shares a driver’s history between states, allowing for a quicker process and helping maintain safety by identifying individuals with a history of infractions or license issues.

The list of states requiring an MVR may change as more states join the S2S system. For updates, check the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security’s website.
