Statewide Speed Limit Campaign Begins: West Virginia Law Enforcement Targets Speeding

CHARLESTON, WV WVNS — Law enforcement across West Virginia will hold a high visibility enforcement HVE campaign in September 2024 to remind drivers to follow speed limits.

The West Virginia State Police announced that the West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program GHSP will launch this campaign to promote safe driving. The HVE period begins with an event on Friday, September 6, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and will continue until Sunday, September 22, 2024.

In 2022, speeding caused 12,151 deaths across the U.S., making up 29% of all traffic fatalities. This was a slight drop from 2021’s total of 12,498 deaths. Motorcyclists and young drivers are the most at risk in speeding-related accidents.

In West Virginia, speeding contributed to 27% of all traffic deaths in 2022, and motorcyclists made up 16% of those fatalities. Speeding can lead to dangerous situations, like struggling to pass other cars or navigate curves.
