Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is part of a group of state leaders urging U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to avoid making international deals on plastic pollution at a United Nations meeting this week. The meeting is focused on creating a global agreement to address plastic pollution.
The letter, led by Iowa and signed by attorneys general from 12 states—including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia—argues that the Biden administration should hold off on agreements that might limit future U.S. leaders’ policy choices.
Marshall criticized the Biden administration’s policies, saying it’s time for them to step back and not make decisions that could restrict a future President, like Donald Trump, from acting on plastic pollution.
The letter stresses that any international agreements made now may not match the priorities of future administrations, and that major decisions should be left for the next president.
The group is calling for the Biden administration to avoid making any significant commitments before the next administration takes office, in order to respect the will of the American people.
