South Dakota Lawmakers Debate Capping Administrator Salaries Amid Teacher Pay Crisis

It seems that Sen. Sue Peterson’s bill to cap administrator salaries at three times the average teacher pay was met with resistance, even though it addressed a significant issue.

The disparity in educator compensation is concerning, especially with South Dakota teachers ranked 49th in the nation in terms of pay.

While Peterson’s intention to narrow that gap was clear, the opposition argued that the solution should come from local school boards rather than imposing a statewide cap.

Sen. Jamie Smith’s point about not solving the problem by reducing others’ pay is an interesting perspective on the issue.
