South Dakota GOP Elects Anti-Carbon Pipeline Leader as New Chairman

The South Dakota Republican Party’s recent leadership election underscores the state’s ongoing debate over the proposed carbon capture pipeline. Jim Eschenbaum, a key leader in the anti-carbon pipeline movement, was elected as the party’s new chairman, marking a significant shift in the GOP’s stance on this controversial issue.

Eschenbaum’s victory, defeating former lawmaker Lee Qualm and Ezra Hays, signals the party’s continued opposition to the Summit Carbon Solution’s proposed pipeline project.

The new leadership team, which also includes Janet Jensen as vice-chair and Tina Mullaly as treasurer, will need to address the challenges of fundraising and staffing within the party while navigating local control and property rights concerns, central to the opposition against the carbon pipeline.

Their efforts will likely shape the direction of the state GOP as it prepares for upcoming elections, while reinforcing its commitment to property rights and local control.

The Central Committee’s vote supporting House Bill 1052, which seeks to halt the pipeline project, further solidifies the party’s position.

The leadership team faces the task of not only managing these environmental and policy concerns but also revitalizing the party’s structure and fundraising efforts moving forward.
