Rep. Joe Wilson, a congressman from South Carolina, collapsed during an event and was taken to the hospital with stroke-like symptoms, according to his office. The 77-year-old is in stable condition and being monitored, as confirmed by his son, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, on Wednesday to the Charleston Post & Courier.
Wilson has served as a congressman for South Carolina’s second district since 2001. He became widely known in 2009 for shouting you lie at President Barack Obama during a speech to Congress about healthcare reform, which later became the Affordable Care Act. Wilson interrupted Obama when he stated that the proposed reforms would not apply to those in the country illegally. Undocumented immigrants are still not eligible for insurance under the ACA. Wilson later apologized to Obama after facing criticism from both political parties.
