In a recent interview, Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton R criticized special counsel Jack Smith’s unsealed filing related to the election interference case against former President Trump, describing it as a temper tantrum from a deranged fanatic. Speaking on NBC News’s Meet the Press, Cotton expressed his view that Smith is frustrated with his repeated failures in the Supreme Court.
The filing, made public on Wednesday, characterized Trump’s efforts to disrupt the transfer of power as a private criminal effort. It included an alleged comment from Trump on January 6, 2021, where he reportedly responded So what after being informed that Vice President Mike Pence had been taken to a secure location.
Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, previously labeled Smith’s filing as falsehood-ridden and unconstitutional. He accused Smith and Washington DC Radical Democrats of attempting to misuse the Justice Department to maintain power. Cheung asserted that Trump remains a strong contender, claiming that the ongoing case is a partisan Witch Hunt that should be dismissed along with other Democratic efforts.
On “Meet the Press, Cotton criticized the filing further, calling it unverified, un-cross-examined hearsay from grand jury testimony, which is typically kept private. He argued that Smith’s request for a lengthy brief to be filed less than 30 days before the election constitutes “professional misconduct that should be investigated.
