On Friday, Utah Senate Democrats selected their new minority leadership team, with notable changes and continued leadership from some familiar names. Sen. Luz Escamilla D-Salt Lake City will return as Senate Minority Leader, a position she has held since 2023.
Escamilla, a banker and advocate for air quality regulations and child care programs, expressed her commitment to representing underserved Utahns and collaborating with the majority party to create strong policy.
Sen. Karen Kwan D-Taylorsville, a psychology associate professor, will serve as minority whip, a shift from last year’s leadership. Kwan, who faced a challenge from Republican Rep. Judy Weeks-Rohner, is currently leading in unofficial results.
Sen. Kathleen Riebe D-Cottonwood Heights will take on the role of minority caucus manager, a position previously held by Sen. Stephanie Pitcher D-Salt Lake City, who is expected to serve through 2027.
Additionally, Sen. Jen Plumb D-Salt Lake City, a physician, was reelected as minority assistant whip.
The leadership changes come amidst the uncertified results of 15 Utah Senate seats, with further updates expected following the caucus meeting for House Democrats on November 19.
