The proposal introduced by Democratic Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen aims to block former President Donald Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship, which is guaranteed under the 14th Amendment.
The bill would prevent government funding from being used to enforce Trump’s executive order, which sought to deny citizenship to children born in the U.S. to parents living in the country illegally.
The executive order has faced legal challenges, with multiple federal judges blocking its implementation.
Cortez Masto and Rosen’s bill seeks to uphold the constitutional right to citizenship by birth, with backing from several other Senate co-sponsors.
However, its success may be uncertain given the Republican-controlled Senate at the time.
