Sen. Dan Sullivan Highlights Alaska s Strategic Role Amid Trump s Greenland Acquisition Interest

Sen. Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) recently weighed in on President-elect Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland, suggesting that Alaska offers the same strategic advantages as the Arctic island. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Sullivan argued that Alaska already serves as a vital asset to U.S. national security, particularly in the Arctic, and should be recognized as such by the incoming administration.

Sullivan emphasized that while Greenland could provide a gateway to the Arctic, Alaska already holds this position, with its proximity to Russia and China making it crucial for U.S. defense.

He pointed out the increasing air incursions into Alaska’s air-defense zone and its role as the cornerstone of America’s missile defense system. Sullivan also stressed Alaska’s vast natural resources, including oil, natural gas, and essential minerals, which surpass Greenland’s reserves in both quantity and strategic importance.

Quoting Gen. Billy Mitchell, Sullivan underscored Alaska’s global significance: “Whoever controls Alaska controls the world.

He suggested that while Trump may still consider purchasing Greenland, the true potential lies in fully leveraging Alaska’s existing strategic value.
