Rep. Mike Turner, the Republican representative from Ohio, has been removed from his position as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed the decision, emphasizing the need for a fresh start for the committee, while also asserting that the change was a House decision and not influenced by President-elect Donald Trump.
Turner expressed pride in his tenure, noting his efforts to restore the committee’s focus on national security.
Though Turner was removed from the chairmanship, he will continue to serve in Congress, taking roles on the Armed Services and Oversight Committees. His removal has prompted criticism, particularly from Rep. Jim Himes, the committee’s ranking Democrat, who stated that it would make the nation less secure.
Turner had been known for his independence and fairness, and had previously criticized both Trump and Biden over their handling of classified documents. He is also a strong supporter of Ukraine and had made headlines with concerns about Russia’s nuclear space ambitions.
