Rand Paul has become more outspoken in his criticism of Donald Trump’s policies, particularly regarding Trump’s proposals for mass deportations and the use of military resources to round up immigrants. Speaking on Face the Nation and to Newsmax, Paul expressed support for targeting criminals, such as those convicted of murder or sexual assault, but strongly opposed the idea of using the military for mass deportations, calling it illegal and a terrible image.
He argued that military intervention in domestic law enforcement would deepen distrust between the public and the military.
While Paul has supported some aspects of Trump’s immigration agenda, including deporting violent criminals, he clarified that his opposition to using military personnel reflects broader concerns about the role of the army in civilian life. He also criticized Trump’s trade policies, including the use of tariffs, which he views as a tax on consumers.
In addition to his stance on immigration and tariffs, Paul has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the growing federal deficit under both Trump and Biden administrations.
His reluctance to fully endorse Trump in the 2024 election stems from concerns over COVID-19 lockdowns, stimulus spending, and government debt. Paul has made it clear that he is seeking more concrete policy positions from Trump before offering his full support.
Despite their past alignment, including Paul’s support for Trump in 2016, the senator’s more critical stance has led to some tensions with Trump supporters.
Trump’s inner circle has expressed disappointment in Paul’s vocal opposition, and there are concerns about Paul’s reliability as an ally in the Senate, especially as the GOP holds a narrow majority in the upcoming congressional session.
