President Biden Poised to Sign Landmark Social Security Reform

Nearly 3 million Americans, including 32,000 in Connecticut, could receive higher Social Security payments if President Biden signs the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act into law.

The legislation aims to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision WEP and Government Pension Offset GPO, which have long reduced benefits for teachers, firefighters, police officers, and other public servants with additional pensions.

Advocates like Senator Richard Blumenthal and the Connecticut AFL-CIO hail the act as a step toward fairness and justice, though critics raise concerns about its fiscal impact.

If enacted, back payments from January 2024 could also be issued, offering significant financial relief to retirees and their families.
