NJ TRANSIT’s investment in new Multilevel III rail vehicles marks a major step in modernizing its fleet, enhancing both service reliability and capacity for New Jersey’s rail commuters.
Initially, in December 2018, NJ TRANSIT’s Board approved a procurement award to Bombardier Transit Corporation now Alstom Transportation Inc. for 113 Multilevel III vehicles, intended to replace the aging single-level, self-propelled Arrow III rail vehicles, which have been in service for over 40 years.
This move aligns with NJ TRANSIT’s goal to upgrade its aging fleet with more efficient and higher-capacity options.
In February 2022, the Board expanded the order with 25 additional Multilevel III vehicles, recognizing a continued need for these upgrades in light of increasing passenger demands.
By July 2024, another procurement for 36 more vehicles was approved, bringing the total to 174 new Multilevel III rail cars ordered since 2018.
This comprehensive overhaul not only aims to improve passenger comfort but also underscores NJ TRANSIT’s commitment to a modern, more resilient rail service capable of supporting New Jersey’s transportation needs for years to come.
