The New York State Police are actively seeking the public’s help in locating a vehicle believed to be involved in the ambush shooting of State Trooper Thomas Mascia.
The incident took place late Wednesday night around 11:45 PM on the Southern State Parkway in West Hempstead, Nassau County.
Trooper Mascia was conducting a routine patrol when he stopped to assist what appeared to be a disabled vehicle on the median.
As he approached, the driver unexpectedly fired through the vehicle’s window, hitting Mascia in the right leg, before fleeing the scene. Despite his injury, Mascia was able to apply first aid to himself and was later transported to Nassau University Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.
As of Friday, police continue to search for both the gunman and the vehicle, last seen near Exit 17. Long Island Troop L Commander Major Steve Udice expressed the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that Mascia was simply trying to help when he was attacked.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, as the manhunt continues.
