New York State Police are gearing up for one of their busiest times of the year this New Year’s Eve, with a focus on traffic safety.
Captain Jason Cease of New York State Police Troup C emphasized the importance of planning ahead, especially for those planning to drink, as they will conduct at least two days of checkpoints and additional patrols. This includes stationary checkpoints for impaired drivers and DWI Saturation Patrols.
Speeding, distracted driving, and DWIs are the leading causes of traffic stops during this period, with speeding being the most frequent reason. Captain Cease warns that every 10 mph over 55 mph significantly increases the chances of a fatal collision.
The state is currently in its annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, running from December 11 to January 1, urging drivers to avoid taking risks even after a single drink. Distracted driving is also a major cause of accidents and fatalities, adding to the emphasis on safe driving practices.
During a ride-along with a State Trooper, Fox 40’s Mike White witnessed a routine traffic stop turn into a high-speed chase. After initially spotting a driver going 92 mph in a 65 mph zone, the stop escalated as the driver failed to pull over, reaching speeds of 101 mph during the chase on I-86.
The driver was later arrested for possession of narcotics after admitting to carrying cocaine. The 17-year-old passenger was detained but eventually released.
The troopers found that the driver had no license, and further investigation revealed the registered owner lived far away.
The motorist’s unsafe behavior led to the arrest, demonstrating the importance of following traffic laws to avoid serious consequences.
As New Year’s Eve approaches, remember to plan ahead, drive sober, and avoid distractions to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday.
