A well-known Democratic senator from New York, Liz Krueger, has suggested a surprising idea: that New York and its neighboring states—Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont—should secede from the U.S. and join Canada to avoid President-elect Donald Trump’s return to office.
Krueger, who is the chair of the New York State Senate Finance Committee, believes these states could face serious challenges under Trump’s administration.
She pointed to his plans to crack down on immigration and deport people, and she worries that liberal states like New York could lose federal funding if they oppose new federal policies.
This isn’t the first time Krueger has made a bold proposal to resist Trump. Back in September, before Trump won the election, she suggested that blue states should join Canada.
She joked about the idea during an interview, saying that instead of trying to sneak into Canada, these states could formally become a new southeast province of Canada. She suggested that New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont could come together and form a new province.
