ROCHESTER, N.Y. — News10NBC Investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke interviewed Dr. James McDonald, Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health, during his visit to Rochester. Dr. McDonald discussed the controversial nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vaccine skeptic, to head a federal health agency.
Dr. McDonald responded to questions by saying, I’d let the confirmation process unfold first. The mission of the NYSDOH is to protect and promote health, focused on health equity — that won’t change with any election.
When asked about potential changes in New York if RFK Jr. were confirmed, Dr. McDonald emphasized that not all preventable diseases have vaccines. Please take advantage of the vaccines we do have, he said. Adults want to understand the ‘why’ behind health advice, and I’ll focus on explaining that.
Dr. McDonald also addressed RFK Jr.’s stance on removing fluoride from water, stating that fluoride is strictly regulated in New York State and that decisions on this matter are made at the local and state levels, not the federal government.
Regarding a potential working relationship with RFK Jr., Dr. McDonald expressed confidence. I’m a pediatrician at heart. I can work with anyone, he said. I’ve learned that being agreeable and using a little honey gets you far. We’ll be fine.
Dr. McDonald is taking a wait and see approach to RFK Jr.’s nomination to lead the Department of Health and Human Services HHS.
