Two marine historians, Brendon Baillod and Dusty Klifman, have discovered valuable sinkholes off the coast of Wisconsin in Lake Michigan. These sinkholes, located 500 feet underwater and spanning 600 feet in width, could provide important insights into the lake’s mysteries.
Kevin Cullen, Director of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, is intrigued by the find, which is within the National Marine Sanctuary. He notes that the sinkholes could have formed due to glaciers or long-term pressure on the bedrock.
This discovery opens up new research opportunities, Cullen said. We’re just beginning to explore what these sinkholes mean and the secrets they might hold.
Cullen also emphasized that only 15%-20% of Lake Michigan’s floor has been explored, and findings like these help expand our understanding. He encourages anyone who makes a similar discovery to contact organizations like the Maritime Museum or NOAA.
