Mountaineer Challenge Academy South Honors 58 Graduates in Inspiring Ceremony

KANAWHA COUNTY, WV WOWK – For many, high school graduation is a routine event, but for at-risk youth, it can mark a new beginning.

On Friday, the West Virginia National Guard’s Mountaineer Challenge Academy South celebrated its eighth graduation. This ceremony honored 58 cadets who completed the 22-week program.

Graduate Tyler Baier shared his experience, saying, I worked hard to be the best in physical training, education, and kindness. I was honored with the Robert C. Byrd Award for being the top cadet.

The program focuses on building discipline and confidence through learning new skills and community service. Some students received awards for their dedication.

The ceremony included drills, ceremonies, and traditions the cadets had learned.

Debi Gipson, the deputy director, highlighted the program’s impact: Even if they don’t earn a high school diploma, they leave with confidence and readiness for the world.

The graduates left with various plans, including continuing in the military, pursuing college, starting work, or spending time with loved ones.
