Michigan State Police Deploys Officer to Assist Virginia Post-Hurricane Helene

MID-MICHIGAN WNEM — In a coordinated effort to support recovery operations following Hurricane Helene, the Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division MSP/EMHSD is sending Public Information Officer Spl/Lt. Kim Vetter to Virginia.

This deployment responds to a request from Virginia for out-of-state assistance under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact EMAC.

“We are proud of our efforts in Michigan to help several states to our south as they recover and bring life-saving resources to those who lost everything during this historic storm,” said Capt. Kevin Sweeney, deputy state director of Emergency Management and commander of MSP/EMHSD.

The remnants of Hurricane Helene have resulted in significant flooding, landslides, and widespread damage across much of southwestern Virginia.

I look forward to the opportunity to support Virginia with communications during their disaster response, stated Spl/Lt. Vetter. Making sure accurate, timely, and relevant information is disseminated to disaster survivors is critical in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

This 16-day deployment marks Michigan’s sixth EMAC deployment and eighth overall support mission to other states in response to Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
