U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury, alongside Congressman Jamie Raskin, is introducing a bill aimed at protecting taxpayers from the financial fallout resulting from Elon Musk’s involvement in government restructuring under the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Musk’s actions, which have led to protests and legal challenges, include dismantling government agencies and raising concerns about national security and privacy, particularly with regard to sensitive information.
Stansbury’s bill, the Nobody Elected Elon Musk Act, aims to ensure that taxpayers are not held liable for the potential financial damage caused by Musk’s decisions. This includes covering the cost of lawsuits expected to reach millions of dollars. Stansbury and other members of Congress have also been investigating reports of staff dismissals at federal agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as the potential dismantling of the Departments of Labor and Education.
Stansbury emphasized that Musk’s actions are not legally justified, and the concerns raised by constituents in New Mexico reflect broader anxieties about the economic and administrative impacts on both the public and private sectors.
