The race for Maryland’s 6th District seat took a dramatic turn during a forum on Sunday when Democratic nominee April McClain-Delaney and Republican nominee Neil Parrott clashed in a heated verbal exchange.
The candidates, who are neck-and-neck according to recent polls, engaged in a shouting match over campaign tactics and personal conduct.
Parrott accused McClain-Delaney of spreading lies through campaign mailers, while McClain-Delaney defended her claims as truthful, leading to a back-and-forth argument that escalated even after microphones were cut.
Both candidates criticized each other’s behavior afterward. Parrott expressed frustration over what he perceived as overly aggressive actions by McClain-Delaney, claiming she invaded his personal space and raised her voice inappropriately.
McClain-Delaney countered by stating that Parrott lost his temper when she attempted to correct his statements, questioning his temperament for a congressional role.
Adding another layer to the campaign, Parrott received an endorsement from Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins, who is facing federal gun charges.
Parrott dismissed Jenkins’ legal troubles as politically motivated, while McClain-Delaney questioned Parrott’s judgment in accepting the endorsement.
The candidates are set to face off again at an upcoming forum hosted by the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, continuing what is shaping up to be a contentious and pivotal race in Maryland’s 6th District.
