A 15-year-old student at Joppatowne High School in Maryland was killed after being shot by another student in a school bathroom on Friday, September 6, according to police.
At a press conference, Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler explained that the shooting took place in a first-floor men’s bathroom. After the suspect fired the shot, he left the school. Other students brought the victim into the hallway, where school nurses immediately began treating him.
The first deputy arrived within two minutes, Gahler said. Within 15 minutes, over 100 police officers from various agencies were on the scene.
The victim was airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition. The 16-year-old suspect, who was attending his first day at the school, was quickly caught nearby. Gahler mentioned that the suspect had fired a single shot.
Authorities believe they have enough evidence to charge the suspect without needing to interview him. “There is overwhelming evidence, Gahler said, although the investigation is still ongoing.
The sheriff’s office confirmed on social media that this was an isolated incident, not an active shooter situation. Parents were instructed to pick up their children at a nearby church.
Later that day, Gahler confirmed that the 15-year-old student, identified as Warren Curtis Grant, had died. Harford County Public Schools also released a statement expressing sadness over Warren’s death and offering support to students and staff as they process the tragedy.
