Kansas City, Mo. WDAF — John Manard, the man who escaped from Lansing Correctional Institution 18 years ago by hiding in a dog crate, has died in an out-of-state prison.
Manard had been serving time in a prison outside of Kansas for the past seven years. The Kansas Department of Corrections reported that he passed away on Sunday, August 25.
In 1996, Manard was sentenced to life in prison for a fatal carjacking. In 2006, while participating in a prison dog training program, he convinced a trainer named Toby Young to help him escape by smuggling him out in a dog crate.
The two were on the run for several days, staying in a cabin in Tennessee, before a high-speed chase ended with their car crashing into a tree. Young was sentenced to 27 months in prison for her role in the escape.
In 2017, Manard was transferred to an out-of-state facility by Kansas authorities.
