Innovative HUD-Approved Duplex Home Tackles Virginia’s Affordable Housing Crisis

Fleetwood Homes, a Virginia-based construction company, is tackling the housing crisis with an innovative solution. They have developed the first U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development HUD-approved single-section duplex home, designed to meet the high demand for affordable housing in Virginia.

The Blue Ridge model, a two-unit home, features one side with two bedrooms and one bath, and the other with one bedroom and one bath. Measuring 76 feet by 15 ½ feet, this energy-efficient home is priced just under $77,000.

Displayed at the Governor’s Housing Conference in November, the Blue Ridge home has already been sold to a buyer in Windsor. Jim Trepinski, general manager of Fleetwood Homes, emphasized that the home is not just a manufactured home; it is Energy Star-certified, featuring energy-efficient appliances and updated insulation.

Currently, Virginia is facing a housing shortage, with 3.6 million housing units available but a demand for 4.1 million. Governor Glenn Youngkin is urging localities to streamline construction and address roadblocks at the local level that often hinder the placement of manufactured homes. With a growing need for affordable housing, Fleetwood Homes’ innovation aims to be part of the solution to this ongoing crisis.
