Idaho Senator Proposes Legislation to Restrict DEI Initiatives at Universities

Boise, ID — Senator Ben Toews R-Coeur d’Alene unveiled draft legislation aiming to curb diversity, equity, and inclusion DEI initiatives at Idaho’s higher education institutions.

The proposal would prohibit hiring DEI officers, ban mandatory diversity training, and restrict DEI-related graduation requirements unless directly tied to a degree.

Enforcement mechanisms include oversight by the attorney general and a provision allowing students, staff, and alumni to sue institutions for noncompliance.

Critics, including Senate Minority Leader Melissa Wintrow D-Boise, warn the bill could hinder free speech and burden universities with lawsuits. The DEI task force is reviewing the draft before further action.
