Idaho Firefighters Join the Battle Against Los Angeles County Wildfires

Nampa, ID — Firefighters from across Idaho are stepping up to help battle the destructive wildfires raging through Los Angeles County. Responding to California’s urgent request for assistance, fire crews from twenty-five agencies in the state hit the road Thursday morning, bringing much-needed resources and manpower to the front lines.

“We took the phone call and began gathering resources to fill an order that California put out for 200 fire engines,” said Nampa Fire Chief Kirk Carpenter, who also serves as President of the Idaho Fire Chiefs Association.

Among those answering the call is Captain KC Zachary of Caldwell Fire Department’s Engine 12. Reflecting on this deployment as a career milestone, Captain Zachary expressed his eagerness to lend a hand. “I’ve always wanted to go, and this timing is right for me. I’m getting close to the end of my career, and I’ve always wanted to go on a deployment, especially one this large, to help another community.”

Caldwell Fire Department is sending five firefighters, each prepared to spend at least two weeks in Southern California. While the mission brings a sense of purpose, there is also an element of uncertainty.

“We’re definitely behind the eight ball with crews, personnel, and water supply,” Zachary said. “It’s exciting and kind of scary at the same time because we don’t exactly know what we’ll be doing until we arrive and receive our assignments.”

Approximately forty firefighters from the Nampa region, along with 14 emergency vehicles, including fire engines and rescue units, are among the responders making the journey.

Nampa Mayor Debbie Kling expressed her heartfelt support for both the firefighters heading into danger and the residents affected by the wildfires.

“The fear and uncertainty they’re experiencing are traumatic and difficult,” Mayor Kling said. “My heart goes out to them. I’m just so thankful that we, as Idahoans, can come together and provide help when it’s needed.”

With Idaho’s crews on the way, their bravery and dedication exemplify the spirit of solidarity that transcends state lines in times of crisis.
