This story from Center Point, Iowa, highlights a heartfelt initiative that honors U.S. veterans by installing flagpoles at their homes.
Paul Schantz, one of the recipients of a flagpole through the Veteran Flagpole Initiative, was deeply moved by the effort.
The group, led by veteran Eric Dolash, installs flagpoles for veterans across Iowa, symbolizing their service and sacrifice. For Schantz, the flagpole represented a long-time wish fulfilled.
Another recipient, Sheryl Amos, was gifted a flagpole in memory of her son, a veteran who had recently passed away. For Amos, the sight and sound of the flag evoke deep emotions tied to her son’s legacy of service.
The initiative, which relies on volunteer labor and donations, has placed 80 flags so far, with each installation costing $750, including a 20-foot pole, U.S. and Iowa flags, and a solar-powered light.
Dolash, who leads the initiative, finds the experience of hearing veterans’ stories incredibly meaningful.
He emphasizes that the flag is more than just a symbol—it’s a tribute to the time, effort, and sacrifices veterans have made for their country.
The organization continues to seek donations and volunteers to support their mission of honoring veterans across Iowa.
