Hannaford Supermarkets, based in New England, is donating the $50,000 commission it earned from selling a winning $6.27 million lottery ticket to three local charities in St. Albans, Vermont. The lucky customer bought the ticket at the St. Albans Hannaford store in September.
Melissa Roberge, Hannaford’s operations director, said, “It’s exciting when one of our customers wins, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by giving back to the St. Albans community. We hope this donation will help these important organizations provide fresh food and safe shelter.”
Hannaford recently hosted a check presentation ceremony at the St. Albans store with the three local nonprofits. The donations are as follows:
- $10,000 to Martha’s Community Kitchen, which provides free meals to people facing food insecurity and homelessness.
- $20,000 to Samaritan House, which offers emergency shelter and support services for people experiencing homelessness in Franklin and Grand Isle Counties.
- $20,000 to the Vermont Coalition of Runaway and Homeless Youth, a program that helps support homeless youth in Vermont, including programs in Northwestern Counseling and Support Services.
Wendy Knight, the commissioner of the Vermont Department of Liquor and Lottery, praised Hannaford for its support of the community, saying their donation will help provide essential housing, food, and services for those in need.
Hannaford also donates about $53 million each year to community causes, including 26 million pounds of food to hunger relief organizations.
Hannaford, which operates almost 190 stores in five states, is part of Ahold Delhaize USA, a company known for its sustainability and positive impact in the retail industry.
