Greenville Native Beau Welling: From Golf Prodigy to Renowned Course Designer

Greenville native Beau Welling’s love for golf began early, achieving his first hole-in-one at just 6 years old. His passion grew under the guidance of PGA professionals at Greenville Country Club, later playing on courses like Riverside and Chanticleer before joining Brown University’s golf team. During college, Welling developed an interest in golf design, studying landscape architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design and interning for renowned golf architect Tom Fazio. After stints in investment banking, he returned to golf design, working with Fazio for a decade before launching Beau Welling Design 17 years ago.

Welling’s firm takes a holistic approach, integrating community-driven spaces on and around golf courses. His projects span South Carolina, including the University of South Carolina’s practice facilities and the new Orange Hill course for the Kiawah Island Club. He’s also working on a new short course for The Reserve at Lake Keowee and a master plan for Columbia’s Forest Lake Club.

Recently, Welling was chosen to renovate his hometown course, Greenville Country Club, where his personal connection and expertise make him the perfect fit. Michael Fletcher, the club’s president, praises Welling’s ability to balance creativity with practical course maintenance, ensuring the renovation respects the club’s storied history.
