Governor Tate Reeves Prioritizes Mississippi Income Tax Elimination, But Ignores $25 Billion PERS Deficit

Governor Tate Reeves of Mississippi has made eliminating the state income tax his top priority, consistently advocating for its phase-out by 2029.

However, while his proposal is central to his administration, other critical issues facing the state, such as the Public Employees Retirement System PERS, have not received similar attention from him.

Despite the fact that over 350,000 people rely on PERS, which faces a $25 billion deficit, Reeves has not commented much on solutions for the retirement system, even though it could present serious financial challenges for the state in the future.

While he has remained vocal about the income tax issue, his silence on PERS is notable, especially considering his previous role on the PERS governing board and his background in finance.
