Governor Phil Scott’s fifth inaugural address focused on key issues such as affordability, housing, and education reform, drawing praise for his clear message on these priorities. However, the absence of any mention of homelessness has raised concerns, particularly among advocates.
The Vermont League of Cities and Towns emphasized the importance of addressing rising education costs, unaffordable housing, and climate change impacts, which were highlighted in the speech.
While Governor Scott acknowledged the need for housing solutions, advocates like Brenda Siegel from End Homelessness Vermont and Ted Brady from the League of Cities and Towns pointed out that homelessness was notably absent from his address.
Siegel expressed hope that the governor would support strong housing policies, but emphasized that those policies must include measures to shelter people in need until permanent housing is available. Both Siegel and Brady stressed that homelessness is a critical issue, with communities overwhelmed by the challenges of supporting the unhoused population.
While Brady acknowledged that building more housing could alleviate homelessness, he called for immediate action to address the crisis, emphasizing the role of both the governor and the legislature in tackling the issue.
Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney Stanak echoed these concerns, noting the need for the state to address unsheltered Vermonters.
Despite these concerns, there is hope that the legislature will take the lead in prioritizing homelessness, with legislators across the political spectrum showing a willingness to collaborate on solutions.
