From Sunrise to Sunset: What to Do in Palm Springs in Just One Day

View of downtown shopping district in Palm Springs California

Whether you’re a foodie, an art enthusiast, or an adventure seeker, Palm Springs just seems to have it all. This vibrant desert oasis is renowned for its stunning landscapes, warm weather, and laid-back lifestyle, making it my favorite escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.

While you could easily spend a weekend or longer here, it is also the perfect place for a day trip. The drive typically takes around two hours from Los Angeles, as long as you avoid the weekday rush hour if possible. But the scenic routes with breathtaking views of the desert landscape make the journey to Palm Springs worth it.

Morning

Pit Stop at Cabazon Dinosaurs

A top view capturing the Cabazon Dinosaurs in Palm Springs. The central focus is a large green dinosaur situated amidst palm trees and walking paths.

Along the way to Palm Springs, if you’re coming from the Los Angeles area, you can make a pit stop at the Cabazon Dinosaurs, a quirky roadside attraction featuring giant sculptures of prehistoric creatures. If you’re traveling with kids, consider taking the Dinosaur Walk, which features a dino dig and fossil panning, a great way to break up the drive.

Brunch at Spencer’s

A waiter serves a dish Fettucini carbonara with mushrooms in a white plate in a restaurant. This dish presents as a luxurious and comforting dish, featuring thick ribbons of al dente pasta coated in a creamy, golden-yellow sauce. The slices of tender mushrooms nestled among the pasta.

Once you get to Palm Springs, you might be craving something delicious. While many people flock to the more well-known brunch spots in town like FARM and Cheeky’s (both fantastic as well) I recommend heading slightly off the beaten path and treating yourself to a long brunch at Spencer’s.

Set up in the San Jacinto Mountains, this is by far one of the most stunning patios in the area. It’s a bit fancier than the others, but the brunch vibe is more laid back, and they’re pet-friendly! Order the banana stuffed french toast and a bellini, and thank me later.

Aerial Tram

The image captures the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway in motion, traversing Chino Canyon in the San Jacinto Mountains, Palm Springs, California, USA. The tramway features a cable car system with the surrounding landscape of the canyon and mountainous terrain.

After you’re filled up from breakfast, take a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which takes you on a scenic 10-minute ride up to the top of Mount San Jacinto. Enjoy breathtaking views of the valley, and if you’re feeling adventurous, wear some walking shoes and explore one of the many hiking trails at the top.

The Desert View Trail is perfect if you only have an hour, a 1.5-mile loop that features several stunning vantage points and is fairly easy in terms of elevation gain. Just be aware the temperatures can drop as much as 40 degrees by the top, so bring a layer as you leave the desert heat behind!

There are also several options to grab a bite or drink at the top if you need a snack after hiking or want to take in the views. The Lookout Lounge is my favorite spot for a midday coffee or a sunset cocktail with a view.

Afternoon

Experience the Local Art Scene

Now that you’ve seen the valley from above, it’s time to hit the heart of Palm Springs for some lunch and shopping. The Uptown Design District is a great place to start, with a mix of local boutiques and all things Mid-Century Modern.

If you have time, you absolutely have to also stop by the Backstreet Arts District. Located just a few blocks away from the downtown area, this district is home to a wide variety of art galleries, studios, and exhibition spaces.

Check the calendar of events, as this district is home to several community events throughout the year, including art walks, street festivals, and live music performances. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in the creative energy of Palm Springs, this is the perfect stop to soak in the local vibe.

Relax Pool Side

The image displays a spacious pool area surrounded by palm trees, accompanied by white sun loungers positioned around the pool.

Palm Springs is renowned for its incredible pools, which have been a hallmark of the city’s luxurious lifestyle for decades. Ranging from intimate and secluded to large and lavish resorts, there are dozens of hotels in the area that each offer their own unique atmosphere and amenities.

No trip to Palm Springs is complete without a visit to one of the spas, and it’s a great way to relax and spend the afternoon. Luckily, just because you’re not staying at the resorts does not mean you can’t still enjoy all they have to offer. I swear by resortpass.com, where you can purchase day passes for as low as $30 and get access to the pools, hot tubs, and cabanas.

The retro-chic Ace Hotel has one of my favorite pools, and you can also grab an afternoon cocktail at the resort’s retro dive bar, The Amigo Room. If you’re visiting in the heat of the summer, the Paloma Slushie is a must.

Dinner With A View

Before you head back to the city, watching a desert sunset is an experience you can’t miss. The way the colors pain themselves over the sprawling mountains while the trees fade into silhouettes is truly magical. There is a mysticism to this region that you really can feel, and it comes alive at sunset.

Even more perfect than the sunset is combining it with a fantastic meal to top off the day. Here are some of my favorites:

4 Saints

This rooftop restaurant at the Kimpton Rowan Palm Springs Hotel offers breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains and the city. The menu features creative American cuisine and a selection of craft cocktails.

The Edge Steakhouse

Located at the Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage, this restaurant offers beautiful views of the Coachella Valley from its perch on top of a cliff. The menu features premium steaks and seafood, as well as an extensive wine list.

Sandfish Sushi

Sandfish Sushi is a popular Japanese restaurant located in the heart of Palm Springs that offers a unique dining experience, especially during sunset. The restaurant also boasts an extensive whiskey list featuring rare and hard-to-find bottles from around the world.

Birba

While you won’t have a view of the entire valley, there is a spacious outdoor patio that features string lights, lush greenery, and a cozy fireplace that is perfect for watching the sunset colors above. This is one of my favorite restaurants for the wood-fired pizzas and fun cocktails. Try the house limoncello spritz!

Before you head out, be sure to stop at Great Shakes for one last indulgence. The retro-style milkshake bar is located downtown and has a vibrant interior with vintage posters and a classic soda fountain counter. You’ll feel like you’re in a 1950s teen movie as you slurp down a rootbeer float. For the more adventurous, there are also funky flavors like Fruity Pebbles.

While this itinerary will give you a taste of what Palm Springs has to offer in just one day, there are plenty more activities and attractions to explore in this vibrant desert city!
