Dr. Janette Nesheiwat, a doctor with ties to Arkansas, has been chosen to serve as the U.S. Surgeon General under President-elect Donald Trump’s Administration.
Dr. Nesheiwat, a general practitioner based in New York, is currently the medical director at CityMD, a network of urgent care centers in New York and New Jersey. She is also a Fox News contributor. Her Fox News bio highlights her work in healthcare, stating that she is “disrupting the healthcare industry by providing immediate access to care.
Throughout her career, Dr. Nesheiwat has led medical missions worldwide with the American Red Cross, including efforts following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. She graduated from the University of South Florida and completed her medical residency at the University of Arkansas Medical Center in Fayetteville. She also completed emergency room rotations at Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Nesheiwat has a strong connection to Arkansas, having graduated from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She previously worked as a physician at Washington Regional Medical Center and Northwest Medical Hospital.
In a statement on November 22, President-elect Trump praised Dr. Nesheiwat, saying she has an unwavering commitment to saving and treating thousands of American lives. He described her as a strong advocate for preventive medicine and public health, dedicated to ensuring Americans have access to affordable healthcare. Trump also recognized her work on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic and after natural disasters such as the Joplin tornadoes and Hurricane Katrina.
Trump also shared that Dr. Nesheiwat’s humble beginnings inspired her career: “Raised by a widowed immigrant mother who worked as a nurse, Dr. Nesheiwat was motivated by her mother’s resilience and compassion to pursue a life of service and become a distinguished medical professional.”
