Despite former President Trump’s significant lead and polls showing Nikki Haley surging to tie with him in Iowa, GOP presidential candidate Ron DeSantis remains confident about winning the upcoming Iowa caucus.
During an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press,” DeSantis expressed his belief in securing victory and dismissed speculation about dropping out if he doesn’t achieve at least second place.
“We’re going to win the caucus. We’re doing everything necessary, building support,” he told Welker, who persisted in seeking a direct response.
DeSantis highlighted the historical precedent of candidates winning the caucus without securing the nomination. He emphasized the dynamic nature of the race, anticipating changes in the field by the time the Iowa caucuses occur.
A late October poll by Des Moines Register/NBC News/Mediacom Iowa revealed DeSantis and Haley tied for second place in Iowa. Trump led with 43%, enjoying a significant 27-point lead over his closest rivals.
While Haley concentrated her efforts in Iowa, DeSantis campaigned actively in the state. Securing an endorsement from Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and undertaking the “full Grassley” by visiting all 99 Iowa counties, DeSantis remains focused on distinguishing himself from the competition.
Predicting a choice between himself and Trump, DeSantis views the primary as a “referendum” on the former president. He believes Republican voters will need to decide between the two candidates, emphasizing his potential to serve two terms and accomplish key goals.
The interview’s first glimpse aired on NBC’s “Weekend Nightly News” on Saturday night, with the full interview scheduled for broadcast on “Meet the Press” on Sunday morning.
