Democrats Expected to Retain Both Rhode Island U.S. House Seats in Upcoming Election

Democrats appear well-positioned to retain both U.S. House seats in Rhode Island in the upcoming election. Incumbent Rep. Gabe Amo is running for reelection in the 1st Congressional District and is expected to defeat his Republican challenger, Allen Waters. Amo, who made history as Rhode Island’s first Black representative in Congress, has centered his campaign on progressive issues, including ending gun violence, protecting reproductive rights, and safeguarding Social Security and Medicare.

Waters, in contrast, has advocated for gun rights, proposed ending government-backed student loans, and pledged to reform federal agencies, particularly the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Amo initially won his seat in a special election last year, succeeding former Rep. David Cicilline, who resigned to lead a nonprofit. With a background as a senior adviser to President Biden and previous roles under the Obama administration, Amo brings extensive governmental experience.

His academic background includes studies at Wheaton College and Oxford University, and he cites his immigrant parents’ hard work as a key inspiration.

In the 2nd Congressional District, Democratic Rep. Seth Magaziner, a former Rhode Island state treasurer, is also anticipated to secure reelection. He is up against Republican newcomer Steve Corvi, an adjunct professor of military history with no prior political experience.

Since taking office, Magaziner has worked on key Democratic priorities like protecting Social Security, lowering prescription drug costs, and expanding the Affordable Care Act. Corvi has campaigned on themes of economic growth, a merit-based immigration system, and support for Israel, positioning himself as an average American without political connections.

Both Democratic incumbents have been well-funded and have the advantage of established political networks, making them strong favorites in this traditionally Democratic state.
