The Delaware State Police has added two new helicopters to its fleet, bringing the total back to four after using just three for several years. These new Bell Textron helicopters started service earlier this month.
Captain Jeff Whitmarsh, who leads the Aviation Section of the Delaware State Police, explains that their unit is one of only a few in the U.S. that handles a “triad mission.” This means they provide paramedic services, conduct search and rescue operations, and support police from the air across Delaware and nearby states.
Having four helicopters again helps them do these tasks more effectively. Whitmarsh says they play a crucial role in getting patients safely to hospitals and assisting police when suspects flee into areas like forests. He adds that being ready for any situation is key, and having four helicopters makes their work more efficient.
The new helicopters also come with advanced medical equipment, including a system that will soon allow paramedics to perform blood transfusions in midair. Additionally, these helicopters are the first law enforcement helicopters to have rear-view cameras, which help pilots make safer landings.
