The Delaware gubernatorial election is set for Tuesday, with Democrat Matt Meyer and Republican Michael Ramone competing to replace outgoing Democratic Governor John Carney. Meyer, currently the New Castle County executive, faces Ramone, a seasoned businessman and the House minority leader known for bipartisan efforts in a predominantly Democratic district.
Democrats have held the Delaware governor’s office since 1989, while controlling both chambers of the state Legislature. Ramone is campaigning on the need for political balance in Delaware, hoping his bipartisan reputation will resonate with moderate Democrats and unaffiliated voters. However, he faces a challenge in the Democrat-favored state.
Education has been a central theme for both candidates. Meyer, a former middle school math teacher, prioritizes increased funding for underserved students, universal pre-K, and higher salaries for public school teachers. Ramone advocates for performance-based teacher incentives, expanded voucher programs, and a reallocation of resources toward classrooms over administration.
Meyer emerged from a competitive Democratic primary against Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long and Collin O’Mara, with fundraising success and a boost from controversies surrounding Hall-Long’s campaign. Ramone secured his GOP nomination decisively with 72% of the primary vote.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
