David Perdue Nominated as U.S. Ambassador to China by Donald Trump

ATLANTA, Ga. – Former Georgia senator and business executive David Perdue has been chosen by former President Donald Trump to become the next U.S. ambassador to China.

Before starting the job, Perdue needs to be confirmed by the Senate, a process where the chamber will vote to approve his nomination. If confirmed, he’ll play a key role in managing U.S.-China relations, a critical focus for Trump’s administration.

Trump has suggested raising tariffs on Chinese imports to as much as 60%, which is even higher than during his first term. He’s also pushing for China to take stronger action against the flow of fentanyl, a dangerous drug entering the U.S. from China. Additionally, Trump wants more discussions between the two countries about their economic influence, as they are the world’s largest economies.

“David will help carry out my strategy to keep peace in the region and build a strong working relationship with China,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He’s been a loyal supporter and friend, and I’m excited to work with him in this role.”

Perdue represented Georgia in the U.S. Senate from 2015 to 2021. He later ran for governor in 2022 but lost to Republican Governor Brian Kemp, despite being Trump’s pick for the race. Before politics, Perdue worked as a management consultant and CEO for major companies like Reebok and Dollar General. His time living in Singapore and Hong Kong gave him some experience in international business.

Perdue is known for being tough on China and has spoken critically about the country in the past. In 2018, he visited China as part of a congressional group and later said on FOX News that the U.S. needs to do a better job competing with China.
