The City University of New York CUNY has announced the formation of a task force on free speech to address tensions related to its handling of campus protests and academic freedom.
This initiative, introduced by Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez during his State of the University address, aims to develop a systemwide policy across CUNY’s 25 campuses to be approved by the university’s board of trustees.
The move follows criticism of CUNY’s response to protests critical of Israel, its cooperation with a state-led review into allegations of antisemitism, and past controversies over restricted student graduation speeches advocating for the Palestinian cause.
The task force, called the Freedom of Expression Working Group, will navigate the balance between the university’s commitment to free speech, its zero tolerance for hate and discrimination, and the need to maintain campus safety and order.
CUNY has also announced additional measures to address tensions over the Israel-Hamas War, including establishing an advisory council on Jewish life and creating a center for inclusion and belonging.
This comes as part of broader efforts to address concerns about discrimination and uphold academic freedom on its campuses.
